All about AGS Files
The AGS file type is primarily associated with AGS Data Exporter.
What is an AGS file?
- Geotechnical Data Files: Most AGS files hold geotechnical survey or analysis data. They are used by programs such as AGS Data Exporter, package gINT, and AGS Data Importer. Some files use a format labeled as AGS4 and may be encoded in UTF-8.
- ArcGIS Server Connection Files: A portion of AGS files store connection settings for ArcGIS Desktop in the Microsoft Compound format. For further details visit ESRI.
- Adventure Game Studio Files: A few files with this extension are used for game development by Adventure Game Studio. They can be either project or data files. More information is available at Adventure Game Studio.
- GNSS Simulation Scenario Files: A small number represent simulation scenarios for GNSS. These files are produced by the ASG Scenario Generator from Spirent GNSS Signal Studio and are detailed on the Spirent website.
The AGS extension does not define a single file type. You must identify which application created the file before trying to open it. Few users know that hidden metadata and configuration details can be stored in these files, making them more than simple text documents.
FilExt.com tips: If you are unsure about the file's origin, open it in a text editor to check the header. Then, use the corresponding specialized software for a full view of its contents.
How can I open an AGS file?
You need a suitable software like AGS Data Exporter to open an AGS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your AGS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a AGS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

AGS file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the AGS files is as follows:
The AGS file extension is used very often and includes different formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 40% of all AGS files start with the magic bytes "GROUP",", which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. Most of these files are 7 KB to 5 MB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The following keywords are characteristic: TYPE, "GROUP","PROJ", "UNIT","","", "HEADING","PROJ_ID","PROJ_NAME","PROJ_LOC","PROJ_CLNT","PROJ_CONT","PROJ_ENG","PROJ_MEMO","FILE_FSET" and "DATA",". These files are attributed to data, investigation, preliminary, internal, ground, draft, point, temperature, measuring, detailed, update, field, issue, dets and wind.
- 40% of all AGS files start with the bytes "**, which are crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are on average 72 KB in size and range from 10 KB to 730 KB. The keywords "**PROJ", PROJ_CLNT, PROJ_ID, PROJ_NAME, PROJ_LOC, PROJ_CONT, PROJ_AGS, PROJ_ENG, PROJ_MEMO, PROJ_DATE, UNITS, PROJ_PROD, FILE_FSET, yyyy and PROJ_RECV are typical for these files. Such files are related to report, project, road, geoags, drive, phase, dtss and twrp.
The remaining 20% of all AGS files are different files with different signatures, the following 6 formats can be found: DOC, UTF-8 and PDF. These files sometimes refer to user, additional, borehole, combined, service, arcgis, export, format, server or cpts. If you want to find out what your AGS file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for AGS File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\rb2\rb2.exe -shelllaunch %1
an ags data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with AGS files
- Associate the AGS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest AGS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available AGS Data Exporter update.
- To make sure that your AGS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .AGS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
