What is an ARXML file?

ARXML files mostly belong to DaVinci Configurator by Vector. ARXML files are data configuration files saved in AUTOSAR XML(ARXML) format.

• Main Use: AUTOSAR is a global group of automotive manufacturers formed in 2003 formed to standardize the software architecture for automotive electronic control units (ECUs). AUTOSAR XML Schema is an XML language definition to facilitate the exchange of AUTOSAR models and descriptions. The AUTOSAR XML descriptions use the ARXML file extension. These ARXML files consist of configuration and specification related data in XML format. The AUTOSAR XML description can contain numerous files. Each and every one of these files denotes an AUTOSAR partial model and can be completely validated against the AUTOSAR XML schema. This information present in ARXML files can be integrated into ECUs for controlling engine components to maximize engine efficiency. ARXML descriptions support UTF-8 character encoding only.
• Adoption: ARXML can be opened using the IBM Rational Rhapsody software which can run on both Linux and Windows environments.

How to open ARXML files

You need a suitable software like DaVinci Configurator to open an ARXML file. You need a suitable software like DaVinci Configurator from Vector to open an ARXML file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Because .ARXML files can come from different programs, they aren't universally openable.

1. Identify the Source: If received from an automotive engineer or ECU development workflow, it is likely an AUTOSAR configuration file.
2. Check the Header: Open the file in a text editor to inspect the opening lines.
   • <?xml or <AUTOSAR> indicates a standard, readable XML file.
   • "PK" suggests it was accidentally saved as a zipped archive.
3. Use the Original Software: The original program is usually required; try Vector DaVinci Configurator, dSPACE SystemDesk, or ask the sender if uncertain.
