All about AVRO Files
The AVRO file type is primarily associated with Avro.
What is an AVRO file
- Usage: Apache AVRO file format consists of serialized data in a compact binary format. AVRO files are written using a schema-based system. They consist of a language-independent schema for reading and writing that is embedded along with the serialized data. The schema (data definitions) are stored in JSON format and are hence capable of being interpreted by several programs. In case the data files are of huge size, AVRO files save markers to facilitate splitting into subsets by Apache MapReduce present in Apache Hadoop. AVRO files are useful in serializing rarely accessed data. AVRO files support schema evolution. Thus the old version of a program can read data based on the new schema and vice versa.
- Adoption: Apache Avro can be used to open AVRO files. Apache Avro is a part of Apache Hadoop which is used for storage and processing of all kinds of data viz. structured, semi-unstructured, and process structured. AVRO files contain data structures in JSON format and are supported by Java, C, C++, C#, Python, and Ruby.
How to open an AVRO file
You need a suitable software like Avro to open an AVRO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your AVRO file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a AVRO file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert AVRO files:
- Avro by Apache
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. AVRO files are often referred to as Avro data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Hadoop (serialized data file) by ApacheAVRO is the file format associated with Avro, an open source data serialization system that was developed within Hadoop, which is a platform that is used to store and process all kinds of data without any format requirements. AVRO is the extension of files used in Hadoop as a serialization format for specific types of infrequently accessed data. This file format is classified as Data. AVRO file format details:
To view or edit AVRO files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the AVRO files:
AVRO is a very widely used file extension. The file type mainly uses a special format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 90% of all AVRO files belong to Avro serialized data. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. A typical file size is 6 KB. The file type is very recent. The following keywords are characteristic: avro.schema, avro.codec, null and {"type":"record","name":"EventData","namespace":"Microsoft.ServiceBus.Messaging","fields":[{"name":"SequenceNumber","type":"long"},{"name":"Offset","type":"string"}. Such files sometimes refer to data, prod, userdata, output, integration, dataexport, users and events.
All other AVRO files (10%) have no consistent format. Files like these are sometimes linked to trip, event, sample, session, twitter, audit or ehubs. Just click the "Choose your .avro file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your AVRO file is.
Technical Data for AVRO File Extension
an avro serialized data file is a special file format by Apache and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with AVRO files
- Associate the AVRO file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open serialized data files. Because only the current version supports the latest AVRO file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Apache manufacturer website after an available Avro update.
- To make sure that your AVRO file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .AVRO file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
