Opening CRC Files
The CRC file type is primarily associated with Total Commander.
What is a CRC file?
How to open CRC files
You need a suitable software like Total Commander to open a CRC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CRC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CRC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert CRC files:
- Total Commander by Christian Ghisler
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. CRC files are often referred to as Total Commander data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Creo (temporary data) by PTCCreo is a 3D computer-aided design product design software for Windows and macOS. It saves temporary data in a CRC file. This file format is classified as Data.
- JPEG Sheriff (data) by Engineering Bureau Office AutomationJPEG Sheriff is a discontinued image manipulation and file organization program. It uses data saved in a CRC file. This file format is classified as Data.
CRC format details:
To find out what program is needed to open CRC files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below is our analysis of the CRC files:
The CRC file extension is quite widespread and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in CRC files:
- 45% of all CRC files start with the bytes A0 crucial for this file format. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. CRC files can be up to 500 bytes in size, but are often around 400 bytes - 470 bytes. The file type was created recently. The following filename is common: CBT0000000002.CRC.
- 15% of all CRC files start with the magic bytes crc, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. Most of these files are 12 bytes to 23 KB in size. The file name .part-00000.crc or .part-r-00000.crc is typical for these files. These files are attributed to parquet, snappy, data, metadata and json.
The remaining 40% of all CRC files are different files with different signatures, such as Total Commander CRC and UTF-8. These files are often connected to timsdk, curve, roast, ppsa, montaged, specimen, config, update or site. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your CRC file!

a crc checksum is a special file format by Christian Ghisler and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with CRC files
- Associate the CRC file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open checksums. Because only the current version supports the latest CRC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Christian Ghisler manufacturer website after an available Total Commander update.
- To make sure that your CRC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CRC file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
