What is a CES file?

CES files mostly belong to CES EduPack. This file type is not a single format but a container for several kinds of data. The dominant use is for Granta material selection projects in the CES EduPack system. It uses an XML structure to store detailed material data.
Other variants include:

  • ZIP-based files that act as backup archives for civil engineering software.
  • Java-based files which are configuration files for regional projects, such as settings for a Brazilian state championship.
  • Files with no defined internal structure that store colorimeter and spectral data for instrument calibration (supported by UPRtek Uspectrum Software, see their webpage).
  • JetDB-based files formatted as Microsoft Access databases used to manage compensation equity information (more details at Microsoft Access).
  • And even variants that contain game-related data like car engine sounds, used in titles such as Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed and BeamNG.drive.

To open a CES file, first check its internal format.
• For XML files the content can be viewed with any text editor or the CES EduPack application.
• For ZIP backups, an archive manager is needed.
• For JetDB files, Microsoft Access or a compatible database tool works best.

CES format details:

If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the CES files looks like this:

CES is not a common file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in CES files:

The remaining 45% of all CES files are files with no common format, such as JetDB and Java. Often described as tire. If you want to find out which format your CES file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .ces file to analyze".
