What is an ECF file?

ECF files mostly belong to Microsoft Outlook. ECF files are not a single, standard file type. They serve as configuration and control containers for various software applications.

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. • 30% of all ECF files are Exchange Extended Configuration File - Office Add-in files, which are using the popular config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The file size is in the range of 800 bytes to 1 KB. The file type was primarily used more than 20 years ago. The following keywords are characteristic: [General], Client Version=4.0, Description=<Description>, Display Name=<DisplayName>, Entry Point=1, GUID={A9CECA24-9F31-11d2-912E-006094EB630B}, Misc Flags=NoOptimizeInterfaceMap and Path="fxsext32.dll". The following filename is common: FXSEXT.ecf.
• 10% of all ECF files start with the bytes 70 3A crucial for this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 4 KB to 29 KB. These files are attributed to extraction, profiling, limited, holdings, health and group, and frequently comprise personal data.

All other ECF files (60%) have no consistent format, the following 11 formats exist: Embird Cross stitch Format, ZIP, PDF, lsdf, OPHTHALMICLINKSPAYMENTFILE, Available and Object.
