How to open ECF files
You need a suitable software like Microsoft Outlook to open an ECF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ECF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ECF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

ECF file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below is our analysis of the ECF files:
The file type with the extension 'ECF' is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in ECF files:
- 30% of all ECF files are Exchange Extended Configuration File - Office Add-in files, which are using the popular config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The file size is in the range of 800 bytes to 1 KB. The file type was primarily used more than 20 years ago. The following keywords are characteristic: [General], Client Version=4.0, Description=<Description>, Display Name=<DisplayName>, Entry Point=1, GUID={A9CECA24-9F31-11d2-912E-006094EB630B}, Misc Flags=NoOptimizeInterfaceMap and Path="fxsext32.dll". The following filename is common: FXSEXT.ecf.
- 10% of all ECF files start with the bytes 70 3A crucial for this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 4 KB to 29 KB. These files are attributed to extraction, profiling, limited, holdings, health and group, and frequently comprise personal data.
All other ECF files (60%) have no consistent format, the following 11 formats exist: Embird Cross stitch Format, ZIP, PDF, lsdf, OPHTHALMICLINKSPAYMENTFILE, Available and Object. They are often associated with config, items, export, configuration, base, case or ieee. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your ECF file!

How to solve problems with ECF files
- Associate the ECF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open configuration files. Because only the current version supports the latest ECF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Microsoft Outlook update.
- To make sure that your ECF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ECF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
