All about CHN Files
The CHN file type is primarily associated with Genie 2000.
What is a CHN file?
How to open a CHN file
You need a suitable software like Genie 2000 to open a CHN file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CHN file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CHN file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert CHN files:
- Genie 2000
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. CHN files are often referred to as Genie 2000 data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

CHN format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the CHN files looks like this:
CHN is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 55% of all CHN files use the same file format, which have the signature FF FF. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are on average 8 KB in size and range from 4 KB to 66 KB. The file type is very old but is also used today. Files like these are about background, cesium, spectrum, unknown and source.
- 20% of all CHN files are using the well-known EXE file format to store the data. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are 69 KB to 680 KB in size, with a median of 680 KB. The keywords !This program cannot be run in DOS mode are typical for these files. A usual file name is Dream Scene Activator.chn or DreamSceneActivator.chn.
The remaining 25% of all CHN files are different files with different signatures, the following 4 formats can be found: UTF-16 (LE) and CHN. Sometimes used for chlist. Just click the "Choose your .chn file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your CHN file is.
Technical Data for CHN File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.
EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\marimba\tuner\Tuner.exe %1
EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\Castanet Tuner\Tuner.exe
a chn data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with CHN files
- Associate the CHN file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest CHN file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Genie 2000 update.
- To make sure that your CHN file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CHN file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
