All about KEYTAB Files
The KEYTAB file type is primarily associated with Kerberos.
What is a KEYTAB file?
- Main Use: Kerberos is a computer network security protocol that is used in the authentication of service requests among two or more trusted hosts across an untrusted network such as the internet. It uses KEYTAB files for this purpose. It is an encrypted, local, on-disk copy of the host's key. The KEYTAB file consists of Kerberos principals along with the encrypted copy of the keys associated with them. Using the KEYTAB file makes it possible to authenticate a principal on a Kerberos host without the need for user intervention or separately storing the password elsewhere. The KEYFAB files are a potential point of entry and if they are compromised, the data on the host system is no longer secure. Hence, the backup of the KEYTAB files, if stored must also be secured using strong encryption software.
- Adoption: KEYTAB files can be accessed using Kerberos on Unix, Linux, macOS, and other UNIX-based operating systems. On the Kerberos Server machine, KEYTAB files can be generated by running kadmin and issuing the ktadd command.
How to open a KEYTAB file
You need a suitable software like Kerberos from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to open a KEYTAB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your KEYTAB file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a KEYTAB file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

KEYTAB format details:
To view or edit KEYTAB files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below you will find our evaluation of the KEYTAB files:
The KEYTAB file extension is used very often and mainly uses a special format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 95% of all KEYTAB files start with the bytes 05 02 00 00, which are crucial for this file format. These files are not plain text files, so they also contain binary data. KEYTAB files are between 73 bytes and 420 bytes in size. The file type is relatively new. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as HTTP. Files like these have the following tags: http, service, kafka, kerberos, prod, funtional, services and jboss.
All other KEYTAB files (5%) have no uniform format. These files sometimes refer to encoded, client, local, proxy, auto, casc or user. Just click the "Choose your .keytab file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your KEYTAB file is.
Technical Data for KEYTAB File Extension
a keytab keytab file is a special file format by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with KEYTAB files
- Associate the KEYTAB file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open keytab files. Because only the current version supports the latest KEYTAB file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) manufacturer website after an available Kerberos update.
- To make sure that your KEYTAB file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
