Opening DAE Files
The DAE file type is primarily associated with Blender.
What is a DAE file?
How to open DAE files
You need a suitable software like Blender to open a DAE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DAE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DAE file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert DAE files:
- Blender by Blender
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. DAE files are often referred to as Blender 3d images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Maya (3D digital asset) by AutodeskMaya is professional 3D CAD design software for creating 3D worlds, short/movie-length animations, character models, virtual worlds and much more. DAE files that are created or used by Maya are 3D assets stored using the XML file interchange format defined by the COLLADA standard. This file format is classified as 3D Image. - Photoshop (3D digital asset) by AdobePhotoshop is a multi-platform graphics creation/editing software mainly used to edit images. It supports most image formats for 2D and 3D vector and raster graphics including 3D assets (DAE) based on COLLADA format. This file format is classified as 3D Image. DAE file format details:
To find out what program is needed to open DAE files, you need to determine the file format. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the DAE files is as follows:
The DAE file ending is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 85% of all DAE files belong to COLLADA digital asset document. The files are using the common file format XML. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The files are 32 KB to 24 MB in size, with a median of 1 MB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <asset>, <contributor>, <COLLADA xmlns="http://www.collada.org/2005/11/COLLADASchema" version="1.4.1">, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> and authoring_tool. A usual file name is model.dae. Files like these have the following tags: collada, body, hightlight, unexploded, legacy, table, char, head, hero, open and unit.
- 5% of all DAE files use the popular XML file format. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. A typical file size is 11 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>, <asset>, <contributor>, <COLLADA xmlns="http://www.collada.org/2005/11/COLLADASchema" version="1.4.1"> and authoring_tool.
All other DAE files (10%) have no consistent format, the following 3 formats can be found: YREC. These files sometimes refer to mario. If you want to find out what your DAE file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for DAE File Extension
a dae 3D digital asset is a special file format by Blender and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with DAE files
- Associate the DAE file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open 3d digital assets. Because only the current version supports the latest DAE file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Blender manufacturer website after an available Blender update.
- To make sure that your DAE file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .DAE file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
