What is a DAE file?

DAE files mostly belong to Blender by Blender. DAE file extension is used to store 3D assets in COLLADA (Collaborative Design Activity) interchange format to allow the easy distribution and use of such assets (DAE files) across different 3D modeling/rendering software. The assets that are saved in a DAE file can include physics, shaders, animation, and geometry data stored using COLLADA's XML-based namespace and database schema which allow designers to transfer 3D assets between various design software without losing any of the stored data.

How to open DAE files

You need a suitable software like Blender to open a DAE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DAE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DAE file directly in the browser:. How to convert DAE files to OBJ, STL, PLY, 3DS, FBX, STP, ...

To find out what program is needed to open DAE files, you need to determine the file format. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the DAE files is as follows:

DAE is a very commonly used file extension and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 90% of all DAE files belong to COLLADA Digital Asset Document. The files are using the common file format XML. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The files are 60 KB to 35 MB in size, with a median of 2 MB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <asset>, <contributor>, <COLLADA xmlns="http://www.collada.org/2005/11/COLLADASchema" version="1.4.1">, authoring_tool, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> and <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no" ?>. A usual file name is Model.dae. Files like these have the following tags: collada, machine, virtual, export, modelo, mario, kitchen and body.
• 5% of all DAE files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "YREC" at the beginning. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. A typical file size is 45 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. YREC.
