What is a DAV file?

DAV files mostly belong to Dahua DVR by Dahua. DAV is the filename extension used to save CCTV camera video footage recorded in the special video format of digital video recorders (DVR) manufactured by Dahua. A DAV file contains encrypted video, audio, and metadata such as timestamps compressed using a modified MPEG compression. The DAV surveillance video format used by various DVRs are not the same. So, you may need to use special software provided by the DVR's manufacturer to play a DAV file. Programs such as Smart Player and DVR365 may be used to play DAV videos.

How to open DAV files

You need a suitable software like Dahua DVR to open a DAV file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DAV file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DAV file directly in the browser:. The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. The DAV extension is very commonly found and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 60% of all DAV files are associated with Dahua DVR video. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are on average 57 MB in size and range from 3 MB to 610 MB. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. DAHUA". A usual file name is XVR_ch1_main_20180601_20180601.dav or XVR_ch2_main_20180601_20180601.dav. Such files are related to hcvr, mhdx, extra, parque, hdvr, nblr, hdavr, monitor and veolia.
• 30% of all DAV files start with the bytes DHAV crucial for this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are often between 1 MB and 410 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as DHAV. Some examples of file names are 20180601.dav. These files are attributed to media, share, orca, download, veselinovo, arcangel, channel, entrada and rear.

All the rest of the DAV files (10%) have different formats, often e.g. JUFEN, ZHILING, Dav, ZLAV and HYAV.
