Opening UFD Files
The UFD file type is primarily associated with UFED Physical Analyzer.
What is a UFD file?
Each variant holds a different set of data details:
FilExt.com tip: A secondary use involves the Universal Forms Document variant, used by Abak for Kazakh tax authority data files. This form of UFD requires different software (often provided by companies like Uniflash) and is not related to forensic analysis.
How to open a UFD file
You need a suitable software like UFED Physical Analyzer to open a UFD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your UFD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a UFD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. UFD files are often referred to as UFED Physical Analyzer data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- PDP-10The PDP-10 was a mainframe computer manufactured by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) from the late 1960s; the name stands for Programmed Data Processor model 10. The PDP-10 was eventually eclipsed by the VAX supermini machines. The PDP-10 product line cancellation was announced in 1983. Related links: Wikipedia PDP-10 Page
UFD file format details:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the UFD files looks like this:
UFD is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 65% of all UFD files save the data in config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The file size is in the range of 330 bytes to 1 KB. The file type is relatively new. The keywords [Dumps], [General], Date, Device, EndTime, ExtractionType, ExtractionStatus=Success, [ExtractionStatus], FullName, ConnectionType and Image are typical for these files. A usual file name is Logical.ufd or Apple_iPhone 8 (A1905).ufd. Files like these have the following tags: phone, apple, samsung, galaxy, card, nexus, plus and android.
- 15% of all UFD files internally utilize the UTF-8 file format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. UFD files are between 530 bytes and 590 bytes in size. The files contain the following words: [Dumps], [General], [SHA256], FileDump=iPhoneBackup.tar, Type=TARFolder, [FileDump], ConnectionType=Cable No. 220 and ConnectionType=Cable No. 210. A common filename is AppleDevice_AdvancedLogical.ufd. These files can be linked to advanced and device.
All other UFD files (20%) have different formats, often, for example, ABCDATA. These files sometimes refer to physical, detected, storage, memory, lggsm, model or mass. If you want to find out what your UFD file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

a ufd Forensic image container is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with UFD files
- Associate the UFD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open forensic image containers. Because only the current version supports the latest UFD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available UFED Physical Analyzer update.
- To make sure that your UFD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .UFD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
