Opening DEV Files
The DEV file type is primarily associated with Dev-C++.
What is a DEV file?
How can I open a DEV file?
You need a suitable software like Dev-C++ to open a DEV file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DEV file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DEV file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

DEV file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the DEV files:
The file type with the extension 'DEV' includes various formats for various programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 40% of all DEV files are Bloodshed Dev-C files, which are based on the config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are on average 910 bytes in size and range from 770 bytes to 1 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The keywords FileName, [Project], Libs=, Includes=, ObjFiles=, ResourceIncludes=, MakeIncludes=, Compiler=, PrivateResource=, Ver=2, Type=1, CppCompiler=, Linker=, Icon= and IsCpp=1 are typical for these files. Such files are related to project, assignment and online.
- 7% of all DEV files start with the bytes /dev/block/, which are crucial for this file format. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are on average 16 bytes in size and range from 15 bytes to 16 bytes. The files contain the following words: block.
All other DEV files (53%) have no uniform format, the following 6 formats can be found: WELL and NGS. They are often associated with downloader. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your DEV file!

a dev application project is a special file format by Bloodshed and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with DEV files
- Associate the DEV file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open application projects. Because only the current version supports the latest DEV file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Bloodshed manufacturer website after an available Dev-C++ update.
- To make sure that your DEV file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .DEV file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
