The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. DID is not a commonly used file extension and has no uniform or dominant file format. The two most common formats are as follows:

15% of all DID files start with the bytes tWbc crucial for this file format. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. Most of these files are 150 KB to 4 MB in size. The file type was used 20 years ago. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as tWbc. The file name 00000001.did or 00000000.DID is characteristic of these files.
9% of all DID files have the same signature 60 20 00 00 64 69 62 64 01. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. DID files are between 8.2 KB and 8.2 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: dibd. The following filename is common: DB0.DID or DB1.DID.

The remaining 76% of all DID files are different files with different signatures, often, for example, Menavrus Device Identification Data, config, aQI, IDCDV and CFileHeader.
