What is a DRP file?

DRP files mostly belong to DaVinci Resolve by BlackMagic Design. DRP is the file extension associated with a DaVinci Resolve project file. DaVinci Resolve is a non-linear video editing and color correction program by Blackmagic Design. The DRP file format stores a project created by DaVinci Resolve. It is a binary file that contains details about the video project's timeline, effects, and settings. The DRP file does not store any media files used in the project. Instead, it just stores references to the media files used. DRP files are also used by DrawPad. DrawPad is a basic graphic design program from NCH Software that allows designers to create simple layer-based images. In this case, DRP files are used to store an image project made in DrawPad. It is used to store details of the different layers that are used to make the image. The layers may include text, images, drawings, and shapes. DRP files can be opened only in DrawPad, but they can be exported to common image file formats such as PNG, JPG, BMP and SVG.

How to open a DRP file

You need a suitable software like DaVinci Resolve to open a DRP file. You need a suitable software like DaVinci Resolve from BlackMagic Design to open a DRP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Unable to Open a .DRP File? Quick Solutions:

Because .DRP files can originate from different programs, they aren't universally openable by standard applications.

1. Identify the Source: If received from a video editor or colorist, it is likely a DaVinci Resolve Project file.
2. Check the Header: Open the file in a hex viewer or text editor to inspect the first few bytes:
   • "PK" indicates a ZIP archive (DaVinci Resolve projects are zipped databases).
   • Readable XML/JSON suggests a structured configuration document.
3. Use the Original Software: You usually need the original program to open it properly. Try BlackMagic Design's DaVinci Resolve, or ask the sender what software they used.

DRP file format details:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the DRP files produces the following result:

The DRP file ending predominantly uses a uniform format. But the following two file formats are common:

• 75% of all DRP files internally use the ZIP format, the DRP file contains a number of compressed files. DRP files contain from 4 to 23 compressed files. Common included file names are Gallery.xml, project.xml, \MediaPool\ and \MediaPool\Master\MpFolder.xml. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. The files are on average 190 KB in size and range from 37 KB to 1 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. project.xml. The file name project.drp is characteristic of these files. Such files sometimes refer to movie, amoung, video, template and film.
• 5% of all DRP files are associated with DrawPad Drawing. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. Most of these files are 11 KB to 2 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. lsdf.
