What is a DTE file?

DTE files mostly belong to dBase. Data Table Engine files (DTE) serve to store structured table data. They are mainly used by dBase systems and are also known as Data Transfer Exchange files.
When a DTE file follows the dBase format, it holds rows and columns optimized for rapid data queries and operations.
Some DTE files use a ZIP container. In that case, they store Legacy Family Tree data from DoroTree, which requires unzipping before use.

How to open a DTE file

You need a suitable software like dBase to open a DTE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DTE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DTE file directly in the browser:. DTE file format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the DTE files produces the following result:

DTE is rarely used as a file extension and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. But the following two file formats are common:

• 45% of all DTE files lack a unique signature. These files contain text and words as well as binary data. The average file size is 2 KB with most files being between 350 bytes and 17 KB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. The keywords INSCODE are typical for these files.
• 9% of all DTE files use ZIP compression, so several files are combined and compressed into one DTE file. The included 127 to 130 files have file names such as Cemetery.Db, Cemetery.PX, Cities.PX, DoroTree.db, FAMILIES.PX, FAMILIES.XG0, FAMILIES.XG1, FAMILIES.XG2, FAMILIES.YG0, FAMILIES.YG1, FAMILIES.YG2, FAddress.PX, FDetail.DB, FDetail.MB, FDetail.PX, FDetail.XG0 and FDetail.XG1. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. The files are 51 KB to 440 KB in size, with a median of 220 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: FDetail.MB. Files like these are sometimes connected to backup.
