What is an ERR file?

ERR files mostly belong to Visual Studio by Microsoft. An ERR file is an error log generated during program compilation or when programs encounter a problem during operation. An error log is saved as plain text or delimiter separated values. It contains a stack trace (details about running processes, operations completed, and operations that failed to complete) when an error was raised. A BASH script on Linux operating system, for example, can redirect stderr streams to an ERR file. Other programs which write error logs to ERR files include: Visual Studio, MySQL Server, Ansys, and Razer Cortex. Any plain text editor can read an ERR log file.

How do you open ERR files?

You need a suitable software like Visual Studio to open an ERR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ERR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ERR file directly in the browser:. A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below you will find our evaluation of the ERR files:

ERR is a very common file type and includes very many different file formats. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 9% of all ERR files start with the bytes 20 crucial for this file format. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are 690 bytes to 2 MB in size, with a median of 10 KB. It is a modern file type. The keywords Warning, MySQL and Server are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are install_licconfig.err. Such files are related to laptop, licconfig, desktop, install, server and local.
• 4% of all ERR files start with the magic bytes 00 92 00 00 00 00 00 00 01, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are on average 4 KB in size and range from 470 bytes to 17 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as test and Export. Some examples of file names are psf.c.err or APPL_GSC_Hndlr.c.err. Such ERR files store data about handler, config, sysdet, appl, hndlr, data and pack.

All other ERR files (87%) have no uniform format, the following 30 formats exist: config, ZIP, UTF-8, XML, UTF-16 (LE), FileGuid, Failed, Regular, Row, Pro, COM and INFO.
