What is a DVR file?

DVR files mostly belong to DVD Player by Microsoft. A file with DVR name extension is a video recording made with Media Center on a Windows computer. DVR files typically contain recordings of TV shows encoded in MPEG-2 format. The file also contains metadata such as capture time and program information. DVR video files are based on Microsoft's DVR format which has been surpassed by the newer DVR-MS format used to save recordings of TV shows on XP, Vista, and 7 editions of Windows. Some older Digital Video Recorders in surveillance systems store video footage captured from security cameras as DVR files. DVR-Studio, a media software for editing and demultiplexing recordings of several hard disk satellite receivers on a PC saves video (streams) in DVR files. DVR filename extension is also associated with a data format used by DESQview, a discontinued software used to run multiple programs simultaneously on MS DOS operating system.

How to open DVR files

If you cannot open your DVR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DVR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

DVR file extension format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the DVR files looks like this:
