What is a DXM file?

DXM files mostly belong to PsmPlayer. DXM files are not one‐sized files. They can hold different kinds of data depending on the creator.

Mobile Ringtones: Some DXM files store mobile phone ringtone data. They are used by software such as PsmPlayer and are sometimes called Yamaha DX7 Music Data files. These files hold tone sequences for phones.

DirectX Materials: Other DXM files contain material information for 3D applications. They are used in game development with Microsoft DirectX and may serve as texture or material definition files. More details can be found on the Microsoft website.

Synthesizer Data: A further type of DXM file is used to store synthesizer parameters. Known as DX7II-D synthesizer files, these store sound settings and are read by tools like DX7 Librarian. They are also called Yamaha DX7 II Data files.

How to open DXM files

You need a suitable software like PsmPlayer to open a DXM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DXM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DXM file directly in the browser:. DXM file format:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the DXM files comes to the following conclusion:

DXM is rarely used as a file extension and is used by different programs with different formats. But the following two file formats are common:

• 35% of all DXM files are DXM music files. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are on average 14 KB in size and range from 1 KB to 23 KB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as MCDF. An example of a file name is Arabian.dxm or off.dxm. Files like these have the following tags: sound and tune.
• 25% of all DXM files are using the well-known config file format to store the data. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. DXM files can be up to 1 KB in size, but are often around 270 bytes - 1 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. TotalShaderPasses, [General], [ShaderPass_1], PixelShaderName=DXPixelShaderPS2_10000000000000000.xpu, TextureMap_1, CULLMODE=D3DCULL_NONE, VertexShaderName=DXVAnimSkin4Diffuse.xvu and body. The following filename is common: mcq_body.dxm. Files like these are sometimes connected to body and arrow.

The remaining 40% of all DXM files are different files with different signatures, often, for example, DXM, eyJjaXBoZXJ and HTC. They are often associated with bank or power.
