All about MDT Files
The MDT file type is primarily associated with Access.
What is an MDT file?
- Main Use:MDT stands for Microsoft Access Database Template file. MDT file format is used by the earlier versions of Microsoft Access (prior to Access 2007) to save templates needed for generating databases. Earlier versions of the Microsoft Access (prior to Access 2007) application used the MDT file format. In the later versions, the ACCDT file format has replaced the MDT file format.
- Other Uses: MDT file extension is used as a data table by the Microsoft ILink application. MDT file extension is also related to the RIFF digital sheet music format. Computer games created by NovaLogic also use the MDT file extension. The TGA (texture) file contents are bump-mapped with an alpha channel and are saved as an MDT file. MDT files are also used by GeoMedia software developed by Intergraph. GeoMedia is an application used in the processing of geospatial data. It uses MDT files to store the standard structure of an Access database. MDT files are needed to initialize an MDB Access database file with geospatial information.
How to open MDT files
You need a suitable software like Access to open an MDT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MDT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MDT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert MDT files:
- Access by Microsoft
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. MDT files are often referred to as Access data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- GeoMedia (database template file) by HexagonGeoMedia is a geographic information system (GIS) management platform used for generating maps and geographic information analysis. This software possesses tools for capturing and editing spatial data. Developed by Intergraph, it is now under the ownership of Hexagon AB. This file format is classified as Data. - NOVA (measurements data) by NT-MDTNT-MDT Nova software is intended for processing and analyzing Scanning Probe Microscope (SPM) images. It has high-efficiency SPM control and image processing. MDF file stores a block of data that represents separate SPM images (1D, 2D, or 3D) or text data. This file is used for the automatic saving of measurement data. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: Manual, Instruction Manual, Scanning Probe Microscopy
- Visual C++ (data table file) by MicrosoftMicrosoft Visual C++ is a compiler for the C and C++ programming languages. This is a development environment intended for creating Microsoft Windows-based and .NET-based applications. Today is a part of the Visual Studio. The MDT file is associated with the Microsoft ILink that was shipped with and supported by Microsoft C Version 5.10. This file format is classified as Data. MDT file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the MDT files:
The MDT file extension covers different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 25% of all MDT files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "00 00 00" at the beginning. They consist of unreadable binary data. MDT files are between 180 MB and 28 GB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The keywords mdat are typical for these files.
- 20% of all MDT files start with the magic bytes AA 00 EF F2, which are always the first bytes of this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. A typical file size is 73 MB.
All the rest of the MDT files (55%) have different formats, the following 6 formats can be found: ELF, SQL and ljA. Sometimes used for text, autosave or sample. If you want to find out what your MDT file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

an mdt database template/add-in data file is a special file format by Microsoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with MDT files
- Associate the MDT file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open database template/add-in data files. Because only the current version supports the latest MDT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Access update.
- To make sure that your MDT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MDT file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
