What is an ECL file

ECL files mostly belong to EclipseCat. ECL files do not have one single purpose. They are used in different applications to store specialized data. For example, the most common use is as an Eclipse transcript file that records session logs and debugging details. These files are produced by systems such as the one at EclipseCat and are usually text based.

• Game script files: These files control enemy behavior and game events. They are processed by an ECL Compiler and sometimes known as Enemy Script Files.
• Job Arranger Lite data files: With an internal CAP format, they hold task scheduling information for job management systems.
• Entity Class Library files: Used in games like Torchlight 2 and Two Worlds, they define properties and actions for game objects.
• HP printer data files: Also called HP Enterprise Control Language files, these carry commands and settings for HP printer operations.

How to open an ECL file

You need a suitable software like EclipseCat to open an ECL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. ECL file extension format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the ECL files produces the following result:

ECL is not a commonly used file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The file formats most commonly found in ECL files are:

• 35% of all ECL files belong to Eclipse text. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The file size is in the range of 3 KB to 420 KB. The file type is a fairly new file format. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Eclipse V. 5.0. Such ECL files store data about rough, elsasserca, heald and invoice, and contain person-related data.
• 8% of all ECL files start with the bytes SCPT, which are crucial for this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The file size is in the range of 5 KB to 51 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: ANIM, ECLI, SCPT, enemy.anm and default.ecl.

The remaining 57% of all ECL files are files with no common format, the following 5 formats can be found: CAP. They are often associated with ecldata, checklist or settings.
