What is an ECO file?

ECO files mostly belong to EcoManager. An ECO file is not a single format but a container that holds different types of data depending on its use. Its internal structure may vary and is defined by the application that created it.

• Game Data Files: Save games and configuration files for titles like Eco Global Survival and Farming Simulator. Some of these files use a ZIP-compressed format or JSON formatting, which allows them to be unpacked or read with a text editor.

• Project Files: Files from ECCO Pro projects that store project settings and data.

How do you open ECO files?

You need a suitable software like EcoManager to open an ECO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the ECO files is as follows:

ECO is not a commonly used file extension and covers different formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 20% of all ECO files use ZIP compression, so several files are compressed and saved in one ECO file. An ECO file can contain up to 260 files (mostly 168 - 230). File names inside are always \Notifications\, \Objects\, \Users\ and \WorldObjects\. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. Most of these files are 10 MB to 35 MB in size. The keywords schema and version are typical for these files. Game.eco is a typical file name. Such files are related to world and ncts.
• 10% of all ECO files start with the bytes U2FsdGVkX1, which are crucial for this file format. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The files are on average 10 KB in size and range from 4 KB to 19 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: U2FsdGVkX1. These files are often associated with bilanz and absolute.
