All about ENW Files
The ENW file type is primarily associated with EndNote.
What is an ENW file
- Main Usage: Endnote being a reference/bibliography management tool uses ENW files as output files to store citation data. The ENW files are plain text files with EndNote tagging such as %A for author or %T for title etc. The ENW files stores bibliographical data that includes author, journal, keyword data and title (which may be a hyperlink to the paper) etc.
- Associations: The ENW file extension was also associated with Microsoft Word. These are data processing file formats which, contain codes or metadata details to be used by the Windows operating system and Microsoft Word to identify elements that are being processed. The versions of the Windows and Microsoft Word that used the ENW files are now outdated.

ENW file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the ENW files looks like this:
ENW is a very widely used file extension. The file type is mainly used by one program with a specific format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 90% of all ENW files are Endnote Export Format files. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The file size is in the range of 140 bytes to 410 bytes. The file type is a fairly new file format. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as %0 Book, U https, books and google. Some examples of file names are scholar.enw. These files are attributed to citations, citation, vufind, english, management, book, introduction, manual and life.
- 1% of all ENW files start with the bytes TY - crucial for this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The average file size is 370 bytes with most files being between 270 bytes and 540 bytes in size. Files like these are sometimes connected to elmnet.
All other ENW files (9%) have different formats, such as UTF-8. The category is note, list, engineering, mathematics, business, nejmoa or theory. If you want to find out which format your ENW file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .enw file to view".
