What is an ERM file

ERM files mostly belong to ERFlute. Files with the .erm extension are used in several distinct ways. The most common use is as an Entity Relationship Model file. In this role the file is stored in an XML structure so that it clearly lists database entities and the links between them.
Other uses include the following:

Game modification data – Some .erm files are used as Heroes III mod files. They store game parameters for Heroes of Might and Magic III.

Exchange format for ER diagrams – A few .erm files use a compressed (ZIP) structure to exchange ArchiMate ERD models.

Database settings – In other cases, the .erm file stores settings for a 4D database and acts as an entity relationship model for software like ERwin Data Modeler.

To open an .erm file, check if the content is in XML or ZIP format by opening it in a text editor.
Use an ER modeling tool (like those from ERFlute or ERwin) if the file shows XML tags such as <EntityRelationship>.

How to open an ERM file

You need a suitable software like ERFlute to open an ERM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. ERM is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. But the following two file formats are common:

• 60% of all ERM files internally utilize the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files are partially readable with a text editor. The files are on average 290 KB in size and range from 60 KB to 1 MB. It is a modern file type. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, <diagram>, <scale>100</scale>, <direction_horizontal>true</direction_horizontal>, <page_setting>, <paper_size>A4 210 x 297 mm</paper_size> and <top_margin>30</t. • 9% of all ERM files are based on the zip format, so several files are combined and compressed into one ERM file.
