Opening ERM Files
The ERM file type is primarily associated with ERFlute.
What is an ERM file
Other uses include the following:
Use an ER modeling tool (like those from ERFlute or ERwin) if the file shows XML tags such as
<EntityRelationship>. If the file is a game mod or database settings file, use the dedicated application provided by that software.

How to open an ERM file
You need a suitable software like ERFlute to open an ERM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ERM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ERM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

ERM file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below you will find our evaluation of the ERM files:
ERM is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 60% of all ERM files internally utilize the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files are partially readable with a text editor. The files are on average 290 KB in size and range from 60 KB to 1 MB. It is a modern file type. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, <diagram>, <scale>100</scale>, <direction_horizontal>true</direction_horizontal>, <page_setting>, <paper_size>A4 210 x 297 mm</paper_size> and <top_margin>30</t. Examples of file names are core.erm. Such files are related to instaclaim.
- 9% of all ERM files are based on the zip format, so several files are combined and compressed into one ERM file. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. The file size is in the range of 46 KB to 360 MB. The keywords ExportData.txt are typical for these files. Files like these are about data and room.
All other ERM files (31%) have no consistent format, the following 4 formats exist: ZVSE. Sometimes used for academ. If you want to find out which format your ERM file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .erm file to analyze".
Technical Data for ERM File Extension

How to solve problems with ERM files
- Associate the ERM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open model files. Because only the current version supports the latest ERM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available ERFlute update.
- To make sure that your ERM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ERM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
