All about EVF Files
The EVF file type is primarily associated with Milestone XProtect Smart Client.
What is an EVF file?
The EVF file extension is used for files that serve very different functions depending on their origin.
For example, some of these files are exported surveillance video files created by Milestone XProtect Smart Client.
Other EVF files include those from Olympus camera event records, forensic image files in the Expert Witness Compression Format used with EnCase, and even a small share from Tally ERP 9 that holds accounting voucher data.
- Surveillance Video: These files store video captured by security systems. They require the Milestone XProtect Smart Client or compatible viewers. More details are available at Milestone Systems.
- Camera Event Logs: Some EVF files are records of camera events or actions, used by certain event viewer applications.
- Forensic Images: A portion of EVF files adhere to the Expert Witness Compression Format for digital forensic imaging. They are opened using forensic analysis tools such as EnCase, with further information at OpenText EnCase Forensic.
- Accounting Vouchers: A few EVF files come from Tally ERP 9 and store accounting voucher data. More information can be found at Tally Solutions.
FilExt.com tip: This diversity means that the proper method for opening and viewing an EVF file depends on its source and intended use.
How do you open EVF files?
You need a suitable software like Milestone XProtect Smart Client to open an EVF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EVF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EVF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

EVF file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our examination of the EVF files comes to the following conclusion:
EVF is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type includes various formats for various programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 55% of all EVF files lack a uniform signature. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are often between 29 MB and 1 GB in size. It is a modern file type. The following keywords are characteristic: <ExportVideoFile>, <Version>1.0</Version>, CameraName, UTCExportDatestamp, <?xml version="1.0"?>, <Version>2.0</Version>, User, <Notes />, <UTCTimeZoneOffset>-25200</UTCTimeZoneOffset> and <Layout>Single</Layout>. These files are often associated with movie, incident, escort, track, room, assault, patron, floor, valet and video.
- 20% of all EVF files have the same signature 4D 31 00 00. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 1.7 KB to 3 KB. A common filename is EVENT.EVF.
All other EVF files (25%) have different formats, often, for example, EVF and Surf. Files like these are sometimes linked to image or forensic. If you want to find out what your EVF file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for EVF File Extension
an evf proprietary container is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with EVF files
- Associate the EVF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open proprietary containers. Because only the current version supports the latest EVF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Milestone XProtect Smart Client update.
- To make sure that your EVF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .EVF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
