Opening a FEM File
The FEM file type is primarily associated with OptiStruct.
What is a FEM file
FEM files mostly belong to OptiStruct. FEM files store data for finite element analysis. They contain the model definitions needed for simulation, such as mesh geometry, material properties, loads, and boundary conditions.
They are used in several applications, for example:OptiStruct input deck: Stores simulation commands for Altair OptiStruct. See Altair OptiStruct. FEMM data file: Holds information for magnetic field simulations using FEMM. Visit FEMM. Nastran models: Used by Siemens NX Nastran and MSC Nastran to run structural analysis. More details at Siemens NX Nastran. XML and SQL files: Some FEM files use XML (as in PowerDesigner by SAP, see SAP PowerDesigner) or SQL (as with RISA-3D, see RISA-3D) to structure model data. Other simulation models: Also found in SESAM X3D and InfoGraph FEM by SOFiSTiK (SOFiSTiK), these files store finite element information in different formats. How do you open FEM files?
You need a suitable software like OptiStruct to open a FEM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FEM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FEM file directly in the browser:. FEM file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the FEM files produces the following result:
An FEM file covers different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in FEM files:
- 25% of all FEM files use the same file format, which have the signature $$ $$ Optistruct Input Deck Generated by HyperMesh. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The files are on average 2 MB in size and range from 49 KB to 38 MB. The file type is relatively new. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Deck Generated, Generated using, Generated using HyperMesh-Optistruct Template Version, HyperMesh Version, HyperMesh-Optistruct Template, Optistruct Input, Optistruct Input Deck Generated by HyperMesh Version, $$ Template: optistruct and $$ optistruc. The file name FEM-H1.fem or Model.fem is characteristic of these files. Files like these have the following tags: mesh, analysis, body and side.
- 20% of all FEM files belong to Finite Element Method Magnetics model. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. FEM files can be up to 44 KB in size, but are often around 2 KB - 16 KB. The keywords [Precision] = 1e-008, [Format] = 4.0, [MinAngle] = 30, [Frequency] = 0, [ProblemType] = planar, [DoSmartMesh] = 1, [LengthUnits] = millimeters and [Coordinates] = are typical for these files.

How to solve problems with FEM files
