Opening an H3D File
The H3D file type is primarily associated with Altair HyperView.
What is an H3D file
Primary Usage:
A small number of H3D files follow the Horde3D format. These files define hierarchical 3D scenes for real-time rendering.
How to open H3D files
You need a suitable software like Altair HyperView to open an H3D file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your H3D file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a H3D file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert H3D files:
- Altair HyperView
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. H3D files are often referred to as Altair HyperView data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- HyperView (3D model file) by Altair EngineeringAltair HyperView is a post-processing and visualization software for finite element analysis, multi-body system simulation, digital video, and engineering data. The H3D file format stores a 3D model mesh and analysis results for Altair HyperView in a compressed file format. It is the default file format for 3D models in Altair HyperView, and is supported by other Altair Engineering visualization products as well.
H3D format details:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the H3D files comes to the following conclusion:
H3D is not a commonly used file extension and is primarily used by a single program. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 70% of all H3D files use the same file format, which have the signature HYPER3D¨. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are 88 KB to 92 MB in size, with a median of 9 MB. It is a modern file type. The keywords HYPER3D are typical for these files. Such files sometimes refer to model, stress, bracket, displacement, analysis, static, strain, frame, front, modal, beam and down.
- 5% of all H3D files start with the bytes P3DD , which are crucial for this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are 2 MB to 25 MB in size, with a median of 25 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. P3DD. Examples of file names are 20180601.h3d.
All other H3D files (25%) have no uniform format, the following 5 formats can be found: Inventor. Files like these are sometimes linked to tensile. You can get all the details of your H3D file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .h3d file to analyze" above.
Technical Data for H3D File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.
EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\Heredis 8\arbre3d.exe %1
an h3d simulation result file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with H3D files
- Associate the H3D file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open simulation result files. Because only the current version supports the latest H3D file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Altair HyperView update.
- To make sure that your H3D file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
