What is an FM file?

FM files mostly belong to FrameMaker by Adobe. An FM file is a document created by FrameMaker technical document authoring and publishing software. FM is also the filename extension of a document created by FileMaker application development environment. Another type of FM file is a product part created by FeatureCAM CNC programming and computer-aided manufacturing software. A part is a component of a larger mechanical assembly or a static tool. How to open FM files

You need a suitable software like FrameMaker to open an FM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. • 55% of all FM files are FrameMaker document files. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are often between 39 KB and 1 MB in size. The file type was developed 20 years ago and is still in use today. The files contain the following words: MakerFile. These files are often associated with spec, introduction, overview, chapter, guide, guidelines, reference, manual, cover, arch and data.
• 25% of all FM files use the same file format, which have the signature 02 01 66 6D 66 2E. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The file size is in the range of 30 MB to 120 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. fmf and cb,IL. Examples of file names are last save overwrite backup.fm. Such files sometimes refer to arsenal, anastasopoulos, premier, regens, retro, tolis, volos and beta, and contain person-related data.
