Opening FSA Files

The FSA file type is primarily associated with ABIF.

FSAFile Extension FSA
File extension: FSA
File type:  Applied Biosystems format file

What is an FSA file?

FSA files mostly belong to ABIF by ThermoFisher. This file is primarily associated with data collection software of Applied Biosystems, an integrated system for genetic analysis. Data related with routine sequencing of DNA fragments by DNA sequencers and analyzers or machines like Capillary sequencing machine are stored in an FSA file. A data-collecting software collects this data and stores it in ABIF format which is nothing but an FSA file.

  • Main Usage: An FSA file is ABIF formatted file and hence it contains structured directories to store data collected by data collection software related with Applied Biosystems. These directories may include Tag name, Tag number, Element type code, Size in bytes of one element, Number of elements in item etc.
  • Associations:
    • FSA file extension is also associated with FASTA, a DNA and protein sequence alignment software package. FASTA file format, a text-based format for representing either nucleotide sequences or peptide sequences, uses FSA extension.

How to open an FSA file

You need a suitable software like ABIF to open an FSA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FSA file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FSA file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert FSA files:

  1. ABIF by ThermoFisher
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. FSA files are often referred to as ABIF data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. FASTA
FASTA is a DNA and Protein sequence alignment software package developed by David J. Lipman and William R. Pearson in 1985 in the article Rapid and sensitive protein similarity searches. The original FASTA format was designed for protein sequence similarity searching, where a FSA file can be opened by many different programs such as Peak Scanner and FSA2PS. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: Wikipedia FASTA Page, Wikipedia FASTA Format Page
  3. FSA2PS
FSA2PS is a program which allows one the ability to convert sequence and fragment analysis raw data files into PostScript images. Once converted into PostScript, the output can be subsequently converted into several media formats such as JPEG, GIF, or PNG. The FSA files are used to store both the raw and processed sequencing and fragment analysis data. This file format is classified as Data.

FSA file format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the FSA files looks like this:

The FSA file extension is very common and includes various formats for various programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in FSA files:

All other FSA files (49%) have no uniform format, often e.g. zlib, XRN, Document, FsA and ref. These files sometimes refer to flanking, sequence, reference, genome, backup, unknown or data. If you want to find out which format your FSA file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .fsa file to analyze".

How to solve problems with FSA files

  • Associate the FSA file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open applied biosystems format files. Because only the current version supports the latest FSA file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the ThermoFisher manufacturer website after an available ABIF update.
  • To make sure that your FSA file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .FSA file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
