Opening GRI Files
The GRI file type is primarily associated with ArcGIS, DIVA-GIS, GDAL.
What is a GRI file?
They hold data arranged in a regular grid, where each cell has a value that can represent environmental responses, geoid measurements, or backup information. This structure supports many tasks in GIS work.
- Gridded Response Image – Used by Maxent to store data similar to the ESRI ASCII Grid format. See more at Maxent.
- Geospatial Raster Image – Employed by DIVA-GIS, it arranges data as a raster grid.
- Gridded Geoid Data File – Utilized by GeoidEval, these files represent geoid variations; for details, visit NOAA Geodesy.
- Gridded Response Information – Found as binary grid files in applications like Golden Software Surfer and Esri ArcGIS. Additional information is available at Golden Software and XMSWiki.
- NATURASOFT Backup File – A distinct variant used within the NaturaSoft program; more can be found on the NaturaSoft website.
Purpose and Functionality:
FilExt.com notes: GRI files are designed to store continuous data sets in a grid format. This means they can be used to model spatial phenomena, display environmental gradients, or serve as backup files for specialized programs. They may be encoded in ASCII or binary forms, so knowing the file’s source helps in choosing the right application to open and view the data.
How to open GRI files
You need a suitable software like ArcGIS, DIVA-GIS, GDAL to open a GRI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GRI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GRI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert GRI files:
- ArcGIS, DIVA-GIS, GDAL
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. GRI files are often referred to as ArcGIS, DIVA-GIS, GDAL gis because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Petrosys client (Petrosys Grid Data) by PetrosysGRI file extension consists of Petrosys Grid Data. A mapping and data visualization app, Petrosys has been designed to cater to the needs of hands-on professional in petroleum production and exploration. The Petrosys application is supported by the Windows and Mac operating systems. The Petrosys application can be used to access the contents of a GRI file.
GRI file format details:
To find out what program is needed to open GRI files, you need to determine the file format. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the GRI files is as follows:
GRI is not a commonly used file extension and includes various formats for various programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 30% of all GRI files start with the bytes ñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØñØ, which are crucial for this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are 230 KB to 11 MB in size, with a median of 2 MB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. A usual file name is IND_msk_alt.gri or PHL_msk_alt.gri.
- 8% of all GRI files use the same file format, which have the signature 00 00 C0 7F 00 00 C0 7F. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The average file size is 58 MB with most files being between 130 KB and 220 MB in size. These files are often associated with merged.
All other GRI files (62%) have no consistent format. They are often associated with mean or ment. Just click the "Choose your .gri file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your GRI file is.
Technical Data for GRI File Extension
a gri grid-based geospatial file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with GRI files
- Associate the GRI file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open grid-based geospatial files. Because only the current version supports the latest GRI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available ArcGIS, DIVA-GIS, GDAL update.
- To make sure that your GRI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .GRI file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
