File extension: HC
File type:  encrypted disk image

What is an HC file?

HC files mostly belong to VeraCrypt by IDRIX. A HC file is an encrypted disk image or an encrypted disk image volume created by VeraCrypt disk encryption software. VeraCrypt uses plipelining and parallelization technology that allows a computer to read data from a HC disk image at speeds comparable to non-encrypted volumes. Another type of HC file is a script written in the Holy C programming language used to develop applications for TempleOS operating system. Such HC files can be edited with a text/code editor. HC is also the filename extension of a C program compiled from Haskell source code and interfaces using Glasgow Haskell Compiler.

How to open an HC file

You need a suitable software like VeraCrypt to open an HC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your HC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a HC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert HC files:

  1. VeraCrypt by IDRIX
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. HC files are often referred to as VeraCrypt disk images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. BI/Suite (data) by Hummingbird
BI/Suite is a discontinued integrated business intelligence software suite. It uses a HC file to store some kind of data. This file format is classified as Data.
  3. Glasgow Haskell Compiler (compiled program) by The Glasgow Haskell Team
Glasgow Haskell Compiler is an open source program for compiling applications written in Haskell programming language. It uses a HC file to store a C program compiled from Haskell source code. This file format is classified as Developer. Related links: Writing Haskell interfaces to C code: hsc2hs
  4. TempleOS (script) by Terry A. Davis
TempleOS is a Bible-themed operating system written in x86 Assenbly and Holy C programming languages. Holy C is a variant of C programming language used to develop applications for TempleOS. Scripts written in this language can be edited with a plain text/code editor and compiled/run using the Holy C compiler. This file format is classified as Developer.
  5. XnView (image) by XnSoft
XnView is a cross-platform image manipulation program. It can open, edit, and convert a HC file containing a high resolution image saved in TIFF/IT file format. This file format is classified as Raster Image. Related links: TIFF File Format Info

HC file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the HC files is as follows:

The HC file extension is very common and is used by different programs with different formats. However, the following two file formats are common:

The remaining 50% of all HC files are different files with different signatures, such as PDF and xgN. Files like these are sometimes linked to game, unli, unlock, unlimited, config or wifi. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your HC file!

an hc encrypted disk image is a special file format by IDRIX and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with HC files

  • Associate the HC file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open encrypted disk images. Because only the current version supports the latest HC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the IDRIX manufacturer website after an available VeraCrypt update.
  • To make sure that your HC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .HC file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
