What is an HC file?

HC files mostly belong to VeraCrypt by IDRIX. A HC file is an encrypted disk image or an encrypted disk image volume created by VeraCrypt disk encryption software. VeraCrypt uses plipelining and parallelization technology that allows a computer to read data from a HC disk image at speeds comparable to non-encrypted volumes. Another type of HC file is a script written in the Holy C programming language used to develop applications for TempleOS operating system. Such HC files can be edited with a text/code editor. HC is also the filename extension of a C program compiled from Haskell source code and interfaces using Glasgow Haskell Compiler.

How to open an HC file

You need a suitable software like VeraCrypt to open an HC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. HC file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature.
