Opening KTR Files
The KTR file type is primarily associated with Pentaho Data Integration.
What is a KTR file?
These files can be stored in different internal formats. In many cases the configuration uses XML, while in some setups the file structure follows a Java-based approach. This dual format supports the complex logic needed for data transformations.
Consider these points:
- Purpose: They define ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) steps to move and process data.
- Internal Structure: They are often written in XML or use Java configuration methods.
- Usage: They are managed within the Spoon interface of Pentaho Data Integration, which provides a visual view of the transformation process.
FilExt.com tip: For further details on the tool and its file handling, see the Hitachi Vantara page.
How to open a KTR file
You need a suitable software like Pentaho Data Integration to open a KTR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your KTR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a KTR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert KTR files:
- Pentaho Data Integration
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. KTR files are often referred to as Pentaho Data Integration data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Pentaho Data Integration (Kettle)A *.KTR file is a Kettle Transformation file used by Pentaho Data Integration (PDI), also known as Kettle. It's an XML file describing a data transformation process, defining how data is extracted, transformed, and loaded (ETL). These transformations can include steps for data cleansing, validation, enrichment, and aggregation. The file format is primarily XML and is executed by the PDI engine. The *.KTR file itself doesn't contain the data but rather the instructions for processing it. This file format is classified as Data Integration/ETL.
KTR file extension format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below you will find our evaluation of the KTR files:
As a file extension, KTR isn't very common and is used by different programs with different formats. The file formats most commonly found in KTR files are:
- 55% of all KTR files are Kettle Transformation files, which are based on the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are often between 14 KB and 60 KB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, <info>, <transformation>, name, <description/>, <extended_description/>, <trans_version/>, trans_type and Normal. Such KTR files store data about transformation, transform and cargar.
- 15% of all KTR files are based on the popular Java file format. This format is used to save Java objects to a file (ex. save game state as file) via object serialization. Such a Java object may contain functions and data like settings, images or videos. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. A typical file size is 1 KB. The keywords java.util.HashMap, loadFactorI, thresholdxp?@ and ,5YrrgAt1mE8RJ/SihY5Wsmga3aSJJET6Jp4t9rI6FGU=t are typical for these files. Such files sometimes refer to sfile, mobi, axis and opok.
All other KTR files (30%) have no consistent format, the following 4 formats exist: ZIP and config. Tagged as dump, report, buguru or salsa. Just click the "Choose your .ktr file to view" button on this page to find out what your KTR file is.
Technical Data for KTR File Extension
a ktr configuration file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with KTR files
- Associate the KTR file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open configuration files. Because only the current version supports the latest KTR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Pentaho Data Integration update.
- To make sure that your KTR file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .KTR file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
