What is an HDV file?

HDV files mostly belong to HD Video Converter. The HDV file extension is used for more than one type of file. Its most common form is a high definition video transport stream. However, not all HDV files serve the same purpose.
Consider these different uses:

How to open an HDV file

You need a suitable software like HD Video Converter to open an HDV file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. The HDV file extension is not common and includes different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 20% of all HDV files use the same file format, which have the signature HDV. They consist of unreadable binary data. HDV files are between 1 MB and 70 MB in size. A common filename is [2020-06-01 10-30]_02.hdv or [2020-06-01 10-30]_01.hdv.
• 20% of all HDV files start with the magic bytes //, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The average file size is 27 KB with most files being between 24 KB and 27 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as // Any range has the following values: (minimum, step size, number of steps), // It is pointed to by one or more *.veh files, // This is the high-detail vehicle parameter file and // Any sett.
