All about MTS Files
The MTS file type is primarily associated with VLC Media Player.
What is an MTS file
- AVCHD Format: These files use the AVCHD standard for high-definition video capture.
- Multiple Streams: A single file can hold video, audio, and other data necessary for proper playback.
- Playback and Editing: They are compatible with media players like VLC Media Player and processing tools such as FFmpeg.
- Transport Stream: The file is structured as a transport stream, which supports error correction and synchronization.
FilExt.com tip: Understanding the file structure can help resolve playback issues or convert files for editing. Despite being mainly used for recording video with consumer camcorders, some MTS files also capture high definition content with extra data streams.

MTS format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the MTS files:
MTS is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type predominantly uses a uniform format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 70% of all MTS files are associated with AVCHD video clips - MPEG Transport Stream. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 62 MB with most files being between 6 MB and 620 MB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The file name 00000.MTS or 00001.MTS is typical for these files.
- 4% of all MTS files start with the bytes 47 40 11 10 00, which are crucial for this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. MTS files can be up to 2 GB in size, but are often around 6 MB - 1 GB. The following keywords are characteristic: FFmpeg. Files like these have the following tags: sample.
The remaining 26% of all MTS files are files with no common format. Sometimes used for sample or video. If you want to find out which format your MTS file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .mts file to play".
