What is a HED file

HED files mostly belong to Dlubal SHAPE-THIN. Word Processing and Data Header Files: HED files serve as header or metadata files that vary by the application that created them. Their purpose is to store configuration details, layout settings, or pointers to additional data. They are used in many fields. For example:

How to open HED files

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. The HED file extension is used very often and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 40% of all HED files use the same file format, which have the signature 01 C0 0C. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 92 KB in size and range from 7 KB to 1 MB. The file type was developed 20 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Times New Roman. Files like these are about invoice, condition and beam.
• 6% of all HED files start with the bytes £Þ° crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. HED files are between 930 bytes and 9 KB in size. These files are attributed to prolights, and often consist of personal data.

All the rest of the HED files (54%) have different formats, the following 12 formats exist: config, XML, BINFACT, QUALITY, Expanded, FPMF and vqB.
