What is an HMR file?

HMR files mostly belong to OziExplorer. HMR files are not one‐size‐fits‐all. In many cases they hold a Hydrographic Map Raster that uses a TIFF format. This means the file contains map images and data used in hydrographic surveying. You may open these files with specialized software such as OziExplorer.
Other uses include:

How to open an HMR file

You need a suitable software like OziExplorer to open an HMR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your HMR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a HMR file directly in the browser:. HMR file extension format:

If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the HMR files:

HMR is rarely used as a file extension and includes various formats for various programs. But the following two file formats are common:

• 50% of all HMR files internally utilize the TIFF file format. TIFF is short for Tagged Image File Format. It stores raster graphics images that support color depths from 1 to 24-bit, lossy and lossless compression and multiple layers and pages. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. HMR files can be up to 180 MB in size, but are often around 940 KB - 98 MB. The file type was used 20 years ago but is still in use today. These files are often associated with prox.
• 10% of all HMR files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "akz" at the beginning. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. HMR files can be up to 190 KB in size, but are often around 2 KB - 29 KB. These files are often associated with biomass and project.
