Opening a JFR File
The JFR file type is primarily associated with JDK Mission Control.
What is a JFR file?
These files capture low-level details directly from the Java Virtual Machine. They record data such as CPU usage, thread activity, garbage collection, and other system events.
Use tools like JDK Mission Control or Oracle's Java Mission Control to open and inspect these records.
How to open JFR files
You need a suitable software like JDK Mission Control to open a JFR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your JFR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a JFR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert JFR files:
- JDK Mission Control
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. JFR files are often referred to as JDK Mission Control data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Java Flight Recorder (Diagnostic and Profiling data tool) by OracleJFR file extension, also known as Java Flight Recorder is a Java utility function used for collection of diagnostic and profiling data related to the running of a Java application. Due to the fact that it is integrated into the Java Virtual Machine and it results in negligible performance overhead, it is used even under heavily loaded production environments. JFR records and stores information pertaining to the Java Virtual Machine along with the Java application running on it. It is primarily used for the purpose of black box analysis, profiling, support and debugging.
JFR file format:
To view or edit JFR files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below is our analysis of the JFR files:
JFR is a very common file type and predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 85% of all JFR files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "FLR" at the beginning. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. JFR files can be up to 3 GB in size, but are often around 510 KB - 46 MB. The file type was created recently. Examples of file names are myrecording.jfr. Such JFR files store data about recording, flight, server, profile, application, client, admin and hotspot.
- 15% of all JFR files are based on the well-known GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are often between 510 KB and 10 MB in size. These files are attributed to localhost, thejvmrunning, control and mission.

Technical Data for JFR File Extension
a jfr recording file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with JFR files
- Associate the JFR file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open recording files. Because only the current version supports the latest JFR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available JDK Mission Control update.
- To make sure that your JFR file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .JFR file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
