Opening a LEF File
The LEF file type is primarily associated with Meet Manager.
What is a LEF file
- Main Usage: The LEF files are record-keeping files intended to manage details of swimming events, details of communication between swimming clubs, event organizers and other related associations. The LEF format has become the international standard format for swimming data exchange and it is commonly used in European swimming competitions.
- More information: The very first version of LEF file was used in 1999 in European countries and later general modifications were made in order to standardize the format. For instance, name tags were renamed into proper English and change in result list format.
- Associations:
- LiveNote Evidence Format File: The LEF file extension is also used for Thomson Reuters LiveNote evidence Format files which are used to exchange transcript. These files can also synchronize video files in it.

LEF format details:
To view or edit LEF files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below you will find our evaluation of the LEF files:
The LEF file extension is not widely used. Such a file predominantly uses a uniform format. The following file formats are most commonly found in LEF files:
- 75% of all LEF files belong to LEN Exchange Format. The files are using the common file format XML. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. LEF files can be up to 240 MB in size, but are often around 13 KB - 3 MB. The file type is relatively new. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <LENEX version="3.0">, CONTACT name, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, registration, <CONSTRUCTOR name="SPLASH, Meet Manager and SPLASH Meet Manager 11. The file name results.lef or Results_in_XML_format.lef is characteristic of these files. Files like these are sometimes connected to meet, format, lenex, invitation and linked, and have often person-related content.
- 5% of all LEF files use the same file format, which have the signature VERSION 5.. These files contain text and words, not binary data. The files are 1 KB to 980 KB in size, with a median of 91 KB. The files contain the following words: BUSBITCHARS "[]" ; and VERSION 5.
The remaining 20% of all LEF files are files with no common format, often, for example, WRd. Often described as events or batch. If you want to find out what your LEF file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
