Opening LXF Files
The LXF file type is primarily associated with LEGO Digital Designer.
What is an LXF file
- Main Use: LEGO Digital Designer program is used in the construction of virtual LEGO designs. The data in the LXF files contains three-dimensional model information saved in a ZIP format. This ZIP file consists of two files, namely; IMAGE100.PNG (a PNG file containing the design preview data) and IMAGE100.LXFML file ( LXFML file contains the design data in an XML format). An older version of the LXF LEGO data file format also contains a third file MODEL100.MODEL within its ZIP container. LEGO Digital Designer and BrickLink Studio can be used to access LXF files on Windows and macOS systems. BricksViewer can be used to open LXF files on Windows, macOS as well as Linux computers.
- Other Uses: LXF files also refer to files created in the LEN Exchange Format (otherwise known as Lenex format). It stores swimming event data which aids in organizing competitions and record-keeping by facilitating the exchange of data between race organizers, swimming clubs, and associations. These LXF files are essentially ZIP files that store a compressed LEF file. The LEF file actually stores this swimming-related information in an XML form. In order to access the LEF file content, the LXF must be extracted using a supporting unarchiving program such as 7-Zip, Corel WinZip, or Splash Meet Manager.
How do you open LXF files?
You need a suitable software like LEGO Digital Designer to open an LXF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your LXF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a LXF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. LXF files are often referred to as LEGO Digital Designer 3d images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Meet Manager (swim meet data) by SplashMeet Manager is a software that allows users to handle data of swim meets. The LXF file extension is associated with the LEN Exchange Format (Lenex), which is used for exchanging swimming data. It can be read using Meet Manager and other software. The LXF file is a compressed ZIP archive which contains an XML file. This file format is classified as Compressed. LXF file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below you will find our evaluation of the LXF files:
The LXF file extension is very common and is primarily used by a single program. The file formats most commonly found in LXF files are:
- 98% of all LXF files internally use the ZIP format, so several files are combined and compressed into one LXF file. The average file count is 2 with most LXF files containing between 1 - 2 compressed files. File names inside are IMAGE1.LXFML and IMAGE1.PNG. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. The files are often between 6 KB and 100 KB in size. The keywords IMAGE100.PNG are typical for these files. These files can be linked to lego, results, battlebot, motorized, torque, triple, glock and chassis.
- 1% of all LXF files are associated with Leitch Native Stream Format video. They consist of unreadable binary data. Most of these files are 98 MB to 98 MB in size.
All other LXF files (1%) have no consistent format. They are often associated with suspension, steering, pistol, mini, truck or tank. Just click the "Choose your .lxf file to view" button on this page to find out what your LXF file is.

How to solve problems with LXF files
- Associate the LXF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open 3d model files. Because only the current version supports the latest LXF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the LEGO Group manufacturer website after an available LEGO Digital Designer update.
- To make sure that your LXF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .LXF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
