Opening LGS Files
The LGS file type is primarily associated with Leica Cyclone.
What is an LGS file?
Key details about LGS files include:
How to open LGS files
You need a suitable software like Leica Cyclone to open an LGS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your LGS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a LGS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert LGS files:
- Leica Cyclone
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. LGS files are often referred to as Leica Cyclone 3d images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Windows Application LogUsed for optimizations.
LGS file extension format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the LGS files:
The LGS file type predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 70% of all LGS files have the same signature wild::geosystems. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are 890 MB to 36 GB in size, with a median of 5 GB. The file type was created recently. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as wild::geosystems and PointCloud. Files like these are about scan, floor, house, building, sample, area and data, and often include person-related information.
- 10% of all LGS files use the same file format, which have the signature Longer3D. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are on average 2 MB in size and range from 340 KB to 6 MB. The keywords Longer3D are typical for these files. Such LGS files store data about head, and have often person-related content.
All other LGS files (20%) have no uniform format. Often described as logs. Just click the "Choose your .lgs file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your LGS file is.

How to solve problems with LGS files
- Associate the LGS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open 3d scan data files. Because only the current version supports the latest LGS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Leica Cyclone update.
- To make sure that your LGS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .LGS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
