What is an MBZ file?

MBZ files mostly belong to Moodle by Moodle. The MBZ extension belongs to Moodle Backup Files - compressed files created by Moodle to store course data. MBZ files are generally ZIP or GZIP files that have been renamed with an MBZ extension.

• Use: MBZ files can be uses to save and restore course data. Educators may create and download MBZ files in order to archive course activities, settings, and structure. Students may use MBZ files to restore and access course data on a different computer.
• Contents: MBZ files contain course material that is used by Moodle, an open-source learning management system that provides e-learning services through online courses. MBZ files may be classified as resources such as files, folders, pages, etc.; activities such as assignments, quizzes and questionnaires; settings such as the course format, themes and UI configurations, settings for course completion, assignments, and quizzes.
• Accessing contents: The contents on an MBZ file can be extracted by renaming the MBZ file extension to ZIP and decompressing with any popular Zip-decompression tool such as WinZip or Apple Archive. Once the content has been extracted, the file extension can be changed back to MBZ.

How to open MBZ files

You need a suitable software like Moodle to open an MBZ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MBZ file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MBZ file directly in the browser:. MBZ file format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. The MBZ extension is very commonly found and mainly uses a defined MBZ format. But the following two file formats are common:

• 95% of all MBZ files internally utilize the GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. MBZ files are between 34 KB and 190 MB in size. The file type is very recent. Such files are related to moodle, course, seguridad, backup, sicherung, sauvegarde, activity and respaldo.
• 6% of all MBZ files use ZIP compression, that is, an MBZ file includes multiple compressed files. An MBZ file contains 15 to 170 files, the average being 148. File names are e.g. completion.xml, files.xml, gradebook.xml, groups.xml, moodle_backup.log, moodle_backup.xml, outcomes.xml, questions.xml, roles.xml, scales.xml, users.xml, \activities\, \course\, \files\ and \sections\. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. MBZ files can be up to 270 MB in size, but are often around 43 KB - 99 MB. The files contain the following words: activities/PK, module and 3PRH. Such files sometimes refer to seguranza, supebonus, ingles and demo.
