All about MCO Files
The MCO file type is primarily associated with Windows Live Messenger.
What is an MCO file?
How to open an MCO file
You need a suitable software like Windows Live Messenger to open an MCO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MCO file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MCO file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert MCO files:
- Windows Live Messenger
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. MCO files are often referred to as Windows Live Messenger data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- MSN Messenger (Wink File) by MSNWinks, let you send a Flash-like animation to the screen of the person you're chatting with. Select the Wink to send from a Winks toolbar button in the chat window. (Often very annoying.) Related links: FILExt Forum .MCO Discussion
MCO file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the MCO files looks like this:
MCO is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type includes very many different file formats. The file formats most commonly found in MCO files are:
- 9% of all MCO files start with the magic bytes A1 # Version number of the file format. #### , which are always the first bytes of this file format. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The files are often between 21 KB and 150 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as # A_l, A_z, Rd_r, Rd_a, Tt_r, Tt_a, # A_rz, Rd_ra, Tt_ra, # Data categories include, # InParm, RAT, # Version number of the file format and User time. Some examples of file names are sample.mco. Files like these are about temp.
- 20% of all MCO files are associated with MSN Messenger Wink files, which internally utilize the well-known CAP format. CAP files are compressed archives. The first bytes (the signature) are 'MSCF' (short for MicroSoft Cabinet File). They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. A typical file size is 37 KB. The files contain the following words: MSCF and content.xml.
The remaining 71% of all MCO files are files with no common format, the following 4 formats can be found: ZIP. These files sometimes refer to char, mesh, bearing, laptop or interactive. If you want to find out what your MCO file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
