Opening an MFL File
The MFL file type is primarily associated with mofcomp.
What is an MFL file?
MFL files come in two common forms. One form is used by Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) as a MOF compiler file. These files are stored in UTF-16 (LE) encoding and are processed by the Windows MOF compiler tool (mofcomp) to load definitions for system objects. This process helps Windows manage system configurations and monitor hardware and software components. For more detailed technical information, see the Microsoft documentation.
The second form is known as the Mozilla FastLoad file. In this case, the file is used internally by Mozilla Firefox to aid in rapid loading of certain resources. It acts as a cache to improve performance, and users generally do not need to open or edit this file manually. More about Firefox can be found at Mozilla Firefox.
- WMI MOF Compiler File: Encoded in UTF-16 (LE), used by Windows for compiling MOF scripts.
- Mozilla FastLoad File: A browser file that speeds up resource loading in Firefox.
FilExt.com notes: If you have an MFL file, determine its source. For a Windows-related file, you can inspect it with a text editor (if you are sure it is plain text) but be cautious. For a Mozilla-related fastload file, it is best to let Firefox manage the file without interference.
How to open MFL files
You need a suitable software like mofcomp to open an MFL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MFL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MFL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert MFL files:
- mofcomp
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. MFL files are often referred to as mofcomp systems because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Mozilla (Netscape) (XUL FastLoad File) by MozillaFile: XUL.MFL and/or XUL.MFASL. Contains precompiled chrome and JavaScript. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 58 50 43 4F 4D 0A 4D 6F 7A 46 41 53 4C 0D 0A 1A, ASCII: XPCOM.MozFASL.
MFL file extension format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the MFL files:
The MFL file extension is not common and includes various formats for various programs. The file formats most commonly found in MFL files are:
- 30% of all MFL files are based on the popular UTF-16 (LE) file format. UTF-16 (LE) is an character encoding system for Unicode. UTF-16 files can be viewed in any modern text editor. These files start with the two bytes FF FE, the so called byte order mark (BOM). They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are often between 930 bytes and 45 KB in size. The file type was primarily used more than 10 years ago. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as pragma namespace, root, instance of __namespace, Microsoft, #pragma autorecover, All Rights Reserved, Copyright, Corporation and #pragma names. Examples of file names are BaseResource.Schema.mfl or MSFT_FileDirectoryConfiguration.Schema.mfl. Such MFL files store data about schema, msft, resource, configuration, management, package, directory and base.
- 15% of all MFL files belong to Mozilla XUL FastLoad File. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are often between 850 KB and 2 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as MozFASL, XPCOM, chrome and content. Examples of file names are XPC.mfl or XUL.mfl.
The remaining 55% of all MFL files are different files with different signatures. Files like these are sometimes linked to aeinv, uninstall, team, keyboardfilterwmi, wolfschanze, sendung, cimwin, mstsc or radio. If you want to find out which format your MFL file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .mfl file to analyze".
Technical Data for MFL File Extension
an mfl system file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with MFL files
- Associate the MFL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open system files. Because only the current version supports the latest MFL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available mofcomp update.
- To make sure that your MFL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MFL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
