What is an MHTML file?

MHTML files mostly belong to Edge by Microsoft. An MHTML file is a document saved in MIME Encapsulation of Aggregate HTML format. It provides a single file solution for saving a web page (HTML) and all its related style sheets, scripts, and media resources (images, videos, audio clips, and animation). Binary data such as videos in the MHTML file are saved in Base64 binary-to-text format. Internet Explorer (now discontinued) was the first browser to support MHTML. Today, Chrome, Firefox, Edge and most browsers support the format. Word, Writer, and other word processors also support MHTML format.

How to open an MHTML file

You need a suitable software like Edge to open an MHTML file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MHTML file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MHTML file directly in the browser:. • 95% of all MHTML files belong to MHTML archive. The files are using the common file format MHTML. MHTML is short for MIME encapsulation of aggregate HTML documents. MHTML files are between 85 KB and 2 MB in size. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. Files like these are sometimes connected to google, download, drive, woman, search, gmail, docx and mail.
• 2% of all MHTML files are MIME HTML archive format files, which are using the popular MIME file format. MIME is short for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions. It is an Internet standard that extends the format of email messages to support Unicode and attachments. These files contain text and words, not binary data. MHTML files can be up to 1 MB in size, but are often around 4 KB - 450 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as boundary, Content-Type: multipart/related;, MIME-Version: 1.0, Document and NextPart.
