Opening MMD Files
The MMD file type is primarily associated with Mermaid.js.
What is an MMD file
For example, some MMD files are Mermaid Markup Diagrams. In these files you write plain text that defines sequence diagrams, flowcharts, UML class diagrams, or entity relationship diagrams. These files are processed by tools like Mermaid.js to produce visual diagrams.
Other MMD files come from the world of 3D animation – they are used by programs such as MikuMikuDance. In that case the file can store 3D model data, animation instructions, measurement data, or even MIDI music information that syncs with the animation.

How do you open MMD files?
You need a suitable software like Mermaid.js to open an MMD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MMD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MMD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MMD file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below is our analysis of the MMD files:
The MMD extension is quite commonly used. The file itself is used by different programs with different formats. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 30% of all MMD files use the same file format, which have the signature MemoImage Bitmap,0,767E050078. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are 3 KB to 16 KB in size, with a median of 4 KB. The file type is a fairly new file format. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as MemoImage Bitmap. Files like these have the following tags: iphone, oppo, plus, apple, realme, huawei, back and note.
- 6% of all MMD files use the same file format, which have the signature sequenceDiagram. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are on average 1 KB in size and range from 460 bytes to 1 KB. The files contain the following words: sequenceDiagram and participant. Such files are related to sequence, diagram and flow.
All other MMD files (64%) have no consistent format, often e.g. Madonna Model, JSON, JetDB, SQL, graph, TITLE, MMD, Min, models and classDiagram. Often described as model, equations, oneplus, samsung, front, redmi, code, lite or mill. How to solve problems with MMD files
- Associate the MMD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open multi-purpose data files. Because only the current version supports the latest MMD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Mermaid.js update.
- To make sure that your MMD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
