What is a VMD file
Vocaloid Motion Data: Most VMD files are designed to store motion data for character animation. They contain keyframe information and movement instructions that programs like MikuMikuDance (MMD) use to animate Vocaloid characters.
Molecular Visualization: In another use, VMD files serve as state files for molecular visualization. These files can include shell script commands and configuration settings that help control simulations. For more details on molecular visualization software, visit Visual Molecular Dynamics.

VMD file format:
To find out what program is needed to open VMD files, you need to determine the file format. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the VMD files comes to the following conclusion:
The VMD extension is very commonly found and is primarily used by a single program. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 80% of all VMD files belong to Vocaloid Motion Data. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are 5 KB to 7 MB in size, with a median of 390 KB. The file type is relatively new. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Vocaloid Motion Data 0002 and kkkkkkkk. These files are attributed to motion, camera, cover, dance, caramel, pain, kobo and marine.
- 4% of all VMD files are Sierra Video and Music Data video files. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. VMD files are between 85 KB and 33 MB in size. The file name 10.VMD or 12.VMD is characteristic of these files. Files like these are about appli.
All the rest of the VMD files (16%) have different formats, frequently e.g. VocalTec Media Descriptor, shell script, JetDB, ZIP, PNG, BAONYVMD and MSH. They are often associated with live, female, vivideba, suisei, girl, doggy, world or miku.
