Opening a MOX File
The MOX file type is primarily associated with Xactimate.
What is a MOX file?
- Xactimate Template – A ZIP-based file holding cost estimation data.
- 3D Model Object – A file that stores a 3D asset used in simulation or gaming environments.
- Simulation Model – A file used by simulation platforms like AnyLogic or ExtendSim to run process or plant simulations.
- Moxie XML Data – A file that contains motion data in XML format, paired with the Moxie Viewer.
- 3D Texture Data – A compressed texture file often worked on in Autodesk 3D Studio Max with tools such as MOXBuilder (more info).
FilExt.com tip: To open a MOX file, it is important to know its source. Use a text editor to inspect its structure if necessary, and then open it with the corresponding software tool.
How to open MOX files
You need a suitable software like Xactimate to open a MOX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MOX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MOX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert MOX files:
- Xactimate
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. MOX files are often referred to as Xactimate data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- ExtendSim (Model File) by Imagine That Inc.ExtendSim is a simulation tool. Using ExtendSim, you can develop dynamic models of real-life processes in a wide variety of fields. Use ExtendSim to create models from building blocks, explore the processes involved, and see how they relate. Then change assumptions to arrive at an optimum solution.
MOX format details:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the MOX files:
MOX is not a commonly used file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 35% of all MOX files use ZIP compression, the MOX file contains a number of compressed files. The included 1 to 4 files have file names such as model_opening_stmts.text.rtf. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. The files are 350 bytes to 2 KB in size, with a median of 840 bytes. The following keywords are characteristic: model_opening_stmts.text.rtf. The file name COMPLETESTR_2020-06-01.H5.MOX or MITIGATION_3.8D.MOX is characteristic of these files. Such files sometimes refer to sopening, sstatement, opening, statement, ssatisfaction, certificate, supplement and sgen.
- 20% of all MOX files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "!XOM" at the beginning. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are 26 KB to 1 MB in size, with a median of 490 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. !XOM. The file name Abrevia.MOX or Ben.MOX is typical for these files. These files can be linked to coupe and mercedes.
All other MOX files (45%) have different formats, frequently e.g. XML, UCOD, LIBN and MOXB. They are often associated with model, project or closing. If you want to find out which format your MOX file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .mox file to analyze".
Technical Data for MOX File Extension
a mox data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with MOX files
- Associate the MOX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest MOX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Xactimate update.
- To make sure that your MOX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MOX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
