What is an NGC file?

NGC files mostly belong to ISE by Xilinx. An NGC file is the netlist of a printed circuit board designed with ISE (Integrated Synthesis Environment) for HDL-based electronics design automation. A netlist (NGC file) contains instructions which a machine tool must execute in order to fabricate a PCB. Such instructions include the pin (hole) size, XY coordinates for each node on the board, constraints etc. Unlike most netlist formats, NGC stores data in binary form. ISE has been discontinued and NGC format is not supported in recent versions of Vivado Design Suite which replaced ISE.

How to open NGC files

You need a suitable software like ISE to open an NGC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NGC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NGC file directly in the browser:. Associate the NGC file extension with the correct application.
