What is a JED file?

JED files mostly belong to ISE by Xilinx. A JED file contains the configuration of a microprocessor or microcontroller that is programmed or configured using ISE hardware design environment. Its contents are written in compliance with device configuration standards defined by the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council. A JED file is usually saved alongside an ISC file which also contains configuration used by the NCD file defining a CPLD device's internal logic and interconnections.

How to open JED files

You need a suitable software like ISE to open a JED file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your JED file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a JED file directly in the browser:. The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. You will often come across the JED file type. This has no uniform or dominant file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in JED files:

• 20% of all JED files start with the bytes 02 2A 0D 0A 4E 4F 54 45 20, which are crucial for this file format. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. JED files can be up to 3 MB in size, but are often around 350 KB - 1 MB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as NOTE All Rights Reserved.*, NOTE Copyright (C), 1992-2010, Lattice Semiconductor Corporation.*, NOTE DATE CREATED, NOTE Diamond, Fuse File.*, JEDEC Compatible, 64-bit and 2 JEDEC Compatible Fuse File. The file name GMUX_gmux.jed is characteristic of these files. Files like these are about gmux, impl and cpld.
• 15% of all JED files belong to Xilinx JEDEC programming spec. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are on average 120 KB in size and range from 34 KB to 230 KB. The keywords DEVICE, Date Extracted, Programmer Jedec Bit Map, PPMAP and N VERSION P are typical for these files.
