What is an NGP file?

NGP files mostly belong to Inkscape.

Image Data: An NGP file can contain PNG image information. It stores Portable Network Graphics data, similar to a standard .png file. Use an image editor like Inkscape or any PNG viewer to open this version.

Another variant is a Neo Geo Pocket ROM file, which is used with emulators to run classic games.

How to open an NGP file

You need a suitable software like Inkscape to open an NGP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NGP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NGP file directly in the browser:. To view or edit NGP files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. The NGP file extension is not common and is used by different programs with different formats. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 30% of all NGP files are based on the popular PNG file format. PNG is short for Portable Network Graphics. It is a high-quality raster image file that supports lossless data compression. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. A typical file size is 97 KB. The file type is relatively new. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. IHDR, IDATx and sBIT. The following filename is common: CAM1_20180601.ngp or 20180601.ngp. These files are often associated with animation.
• 10% of all NGP files start with the magic bytes 49 45 03 04 14 00 00 00 08, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. NGP files are between 10 KB and 2 MB in size.

All other NGP files (60%) have no consistent format, often, for example, NeoGeo game cartridge, Nord Grand Program Bank, config and certificate. They are often associated with pocket, europe, series, japan, metal or multi.
