Opening PTH Files
The PTH file type is primarily associated with PyTorch.
What is a PTH file?
How to open PTH files
You need a suitable software like PyTorch to open a PTH file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PTH file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PTH file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert PTH files:
- PyTorch by Meta
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PTH files are often referred to as PyTorch developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- 4th Dimension (database windows pathnames) by 4D SAS4th Dimension is a discontinued 4-dimensional computer-aided design and manufacturing software. It saved its database windows pathnames in a PTH file. This file format is classified as Database.
- Business Card Designer (data) by CAM DevelopmentBusiness Card Designer is a desktop publishing application for creating and printing business cards. It saves data in a PTH file. This file format is classified as Data.
- Purity (instrument patch) by Sonic CatPurity is a virtual sound workstation compatible with Windows and macOS. Its music instrument patches are saved in a PTH file. This file format is classified as Data.
- Python (virtual environment path) by Python Software FoundationPython is an application development environment and a high level programming language. It uses a PTH file to save the path configuration of a virtual environment. This file format is classified as Settings.
- VisualGPS XP (path) by VisualGPSVisualGPS XP is a GPS data visualization software for Windows operating system. Its path is saved in a file with PTH filename extension. This file format is classified as Misc.
PTH file extension format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the PTH files looks like this:
The PTH extension is very commonly used. This PTH file itself is among the most popular common file types and is used by different programs with different formats. But the following two file formats are common:
- 55% of all PTH files use the ZIP algorithm, so several files are combined and compressed into one PTH file. Such a ZIP file contains 4 to 250 files with names like \archive\data.pkl and \archive\version. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. Most of these files are 28 KB to 100 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. ccollections, OrderedDict, ctorch._utils, _rebuild_tensor_v2, weightq, storageq, ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ, archive/data.pklFB and FloatStorage. A common filename is Model.pth. Such files are related to best, epoch, checkpoint, data, resnet, weights, latest and policy.
- 35% of all PTH files belong to Machine Learning Pytorch Model. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. Most of these files are 320 KB to 250 MB in size. The keywords intq, little_endianq, longq, protocol_versionq, shortq, type_sizesq, ccollections, OrderedDict and weightq are typical for these files. Files like these are about dict, coco, parsenet, parsing, pose and mobilenet.
All other PTH files (10%) have no uniform format, the following 26 formats can be found: XML, JFIF, DOC, MP3, Java, PaxHeader, import, pth, LUXONIX and version. They are often associated with cifar, ckpt, trained, pretrained, plus or train. You can get all the details of your PTH file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .pth file to analyze" above.

a pth model/dataset is a special file format by Meta and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with PTH files
- Associate the PTH file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open model/datasets. Because only the current version supports the latest PTH file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Meta manufacturer website after an available PyTorch update.
- To make sure that your PTH file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PTH file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
